How much rent can I afford?
Enter your income and how often you're paid. You'll see the rent that fits your chosen share of income, per week, fortnight and month. Free, no sign-up, and nothing you type leaves your device.
Moving soon?
The Aussie Renter Bundle spreadsheet helps you plan the move: your application, your moving budget (bond, rent in advance and moving costs) and getting your bond back. Excel and Google Sheets. No app, no sign-up, no subscription.
How it works
The sum
Your income is turned into a yearly amount (weekly x 52, fortnightly x 26, monthly x 12), multiplied by the share you choose, then divided back into weeks, fortnights and months. Amounts are rounded down to the cent.
Where 30% comes from
Housing researchers often treat a household as being in housing stress if it is in the lower 40% of incomes and pays more than 30% of its gross income on housing. It's a benchmark, not a rule: many people need to spend more, and paying less leaves more room for everything else.
Before or after tax?
The benchmark uses income before tax. Your bills come out of take-home pay, so working from take-home pay gives a stricter, safer number. This is a planning tool, not financial advice.
