How it works
The sum
Watts divided by 1,000 gives kilowatts. Kilowatts times hours gives the energy used in kilowatt-hours (kWh), and kWh times your price per kWh gives the cost. A year is worked out as 365 days, so a week is 7/365 of it, and a month is a year divided by 12. Amounts are rounded to the cent.
Example
A 2,400 W heater used 4 hours a day is 2.4 kW x 4 = 9.6 kWh a day. At 30 cents per kWh that's $2.88 a day, or about $1,051 a year if you use it every day.
Why your real cost may differ
Many appliances don't run at full power all the time. Heaters and air conditioners with a thermostat switch on and off, and fridges cycle through the day. Your bill also has a daily supply charge that this doesn't include, and some plans charge different rates at different times of day. Use the rate for when you actually run the appliance.
